The Various Types of Stump Socks:
|
The Traditional Merino Wool Stump Sock |
|
LEG SOCKS:
STANDARD -
Weight = 6-ply. Seamlessly knitted from 100% pure new shrink
resistant Australian Merino wool, with at least 10 stitches (eyelets) to an
inch in width, and 14 rows to an inch in length. This sock is used by the
majority of amputees and also complies with the Australian Department of
Veterans' Affairs specifications. Click
here to view a picture of the Standard sock.
XL COSY (EXTRA LIGHT)
- Weight = 4-ply. Same wool specification as
STANDARD. Used when a thinner sock is required. Lower end (approx. 3
inches) is reinforced to STANDARD thickness for added strength.
Click here to view a picture of the Extra Light Cosy sock.
XH COSY (EXTRA HEAVY)
- Weight = 8 ply . Same wool specification as STANDARD.
Used when extra thickness is required. Click
here to view a picture of the Extra Heavy Cosy sock.
BLUE (Cosy)
- Weight = 8 ply . A combination of wool and polyester
- The brushed inner layer of 6-ply has the same wool specification as the
STANDARD leg sock and an outer layer (Blue) of 2-ply wool/polyester
mixture. This sock was developed to be used in cases where undue wear on
sock exists (usually as a result of loose fitting) and as an interim measure
until problem is rectified by the fitter. This sock is also suitable where
extra strength and/or thickness is required. Click
here to view a picture of the Blue Cosy sock.
BLUE-TIP
- A STANDARD leg sock with reinforced toe end (approx. 2 to 3
inches). The reinforcement is made with an outer blue layer of 2-ply
wool/polyester mixture. Click
here to view a picture of the Blue-Tip sock.
COSY -
Denotes brushing. A standard feature in XL, XH, Cool Wool and
BLUE. The sock is brushed on the inside for added comfort.
ARM SOCKS:
STANDARD
- Weight = 4 ply. Same wool specification as in
STANDARD LEG. We do not make the XL type in the Arm Socks
range. However, the following types can be specially made: XH (
6-ply), BLUE (6-ply). Click
here to view a picture of the Standard Above Elbow sock.
Another type is the Reinforced arm sock coded 'R'. The
Reinforced arm sock is the same as the STANDARD ARM sock, except
the lower end of the sock is reinforced to 6 ply weight (i.e.
BE 12x1R).

-->-->Fleecenette - The CoolMax Stump
Sock |
-->
-->This stump sock is arguably, cooler, lighter and softer
than any other stump sock available today anywhere. It is knitted with
CoolMax* (95%) for its wicking ability (the ability to draw moisture away
from the skin) and Lycra* (5%) for stretch/recovery properties.
CoolMax
is a Du
Pont engineered fibre developed especially for athletes to help keep their skin
dry and cool in the heat of competition. The CoolMax fibre within the
Fleecenette works in conjunction with the body's cooling system. Its unique
4-channel fibres pull moisture away from the skin through the fibres. Moisture
is then evaporates into the air.
If you find
that some moisture is trapped inside the socket of the prosthesis we suggest you
wear a woollen sock over the
Fleecenette
to absorb the excess perspiration. Alternatively try our newest product, the
Cool Wool sock. The
fibres used in CoolMax are hydrophobic or water hating. In testing a
fabric's ability to transport moisture away from the skin and evaporate it into
the air, CoolMax proved to be most efficient.
Cotton
initially transports moisture by absorbing it, but the material quickly becomes
soaked and clammy, similarly, Polypropylene fails to transport any measurable
amount of moisture at all. CoolMax fibres, however, retain 8 times less
moisture than Nylon, 14 times less moisture than cotton and 10 times less
moisture than wool. Socks made with Polypropylene have no wicking ability as
they fail to transport any measurable amount of moisture hence trapping
perspiration.
The
Fleecenette
stump sock will greatly aid in the repair process of chaffed, cracked and
slow-to-heal skin condition often experienced by diabetic sufferers.
This versatile sock is ideal for use during rehabilitation when the skin is
usually tender and sensitive.
Our traditional Fleecenette
is knitted in 4-Ply weight.
Click here to view a picture of the
Fleecenette
sock.
We have
recently introduced the Light 2-ply
Fleecenette.
Both of these types may also be worn as a filler or simply for extra comfort.
*CoolMax
is a DU PONT certification mark for fabrics of high performance polyester
meeting its quality standards.
*Lycra is a DU PONT registered trademark for its spandex fibre.

-->Cool Wool - The Stretchable Woolblend Stump Sock |
-->
Original
Cool Wool
sock consists of an inner layer of 2-ply brushed CoolMax* and an outer
layer of 4-ply Australian Merino wool. The Cool Wool Sock is stretchable and
well cushioned. The inner CoolMax layer wicks perspiration away from the skin
into the outer wool layer.
Also
available the recently introduced Cool Wool Heavy and Cool Wool Extra
Heavy.
The Cool Wool
Heavy
- 6-ply Merino wool + 3-ply CoolMax. 40% thicker than the original Cool Wool
sock.
The Cool Wool
Extra Heavy
- 8-ply Merino wool + 4-ply CoolMax, 75% thicker than the original Cool Wool
sock. So if you are looking for a truly thick sock this is the one for you as
you won't find a thicker sock that that anywhere.

is a DU PONT certification mark for fabrics of high performance polyester
meeting its quality standards.
